image295The history of Moon’s is long and colorful starting back in 1955 when as the legend goes, Moon’s Lunch opened in the back of Moon’s Gun and Tackle Shop, a popular sporting goods store run by Bernie and Cid Moon.  Since much of the known history is legend, we found additional history regarding this Boise Landmark.

Bernie W. Moon, a native Iowan, moved to Stanley, Idaho in the early 1920’s. Somewhere he met and married Cecelia A. “Cid” Brown, of the Payette Browns, on April 20, 1923. From all accounts, they had one child, Martha J Moon-Nelson; who had two children, Fern Drake of Kuna and Michael Dudley of Boise. In 1983, Michael purchased the Gun and Tackle Shop from his grandfather, who had sold the Kitchen portion to Willis Hovey in 1980. There have only been a handful of owners since 1955.  Known for its Milkshakes, grand portions and great diner prices, Moon’s has withstood the test of time.

Bob Dempsey and Lisa Kugel are now theJerry Squires Rest Photo proud owners of Moon’s Kitchen Café.

Bob and Lisa feel their good fortune led them to Moon’s Kitchen.   It has always been Bob’s dream to own a restaurant.  Bob moved from New Jersey to  Idaho in 2000 for Love!  Lisa, has lived and worked in Idaho for over 25 years. She feels lucky to have the opportunity to work with her husband and best friend.  East Coast truly meets West Coast now at Moon’s Kitchen Café!  The feeling of family and community was of ultimate

importance to both Bob and Lisa in their search to purchase a local restaurant.
