In 1955, as the legend goes, Moon’s Lunch opened in the back of Moon’s Guns and Tackle, a popular sporting goods store run by Bernie and Cid Moon.” Since much of the known history is legend, I decided to do some “real” research and unveiled the following “more” accurate history from the lips of Martha Moon her self.
Bernie W. Moon, a native Iowan, moved to Stanley, Idaho in the early 1920’s. He met and married his sweetheart Cecelia A. “Cid” Brown, of the Payette Browns, on April 20, 1923. They had one child, Martha J Moon-Nelson; who begat two children, Fern Drake of Kuna and Michael Dudley of Boise. Martha started the sandwich shop for Boise Lunch in the back of her parents Gun and Tackle shop with her Mother. Moon’s became known for its hand dipped milkshakes (still served today) and one of the favorite lunch restaurants in Boise! Breakfast at Moon’s Kitchen was the way to go for the hunters and fisherman who frequented the shop. In 1983, Mike purchased the Gun and Tackle from his grandfather, who had sold the cafe portion to Willis Hovey in 1980. As far as we know, Bob and Lisa will be only the 6th owners of Moon’s in 52 years! Moon’s Kitchen move locations in December of 2008 from Bannock Street to Idaho Street. The move was necessary. The building Moon’s had occupied since 1962 was falling apart. Up until the move, dishes were all done by hand...it really was like 1955! Lisa and Bob had the opportunity to occupy the space once occupied by Villano’s. It was simply the best move ever. The space is bright, cozy and just what they were looking for. They are looking forward to the opportunity to become a part of this great history and keep Moon’s doing what Moon’s Kitchen does best, FEED YOU!
