A History of Moon’s Kitchen Café
Home of Boise’s Best
“World Famous” Milkshakes
712 W Idaho Street, Boise, Idaho

While cleaning a storeroom, the former owner found an old menu with a “history” by the family from whom they purchased the Boise “landmark.” It begins . . . “ In 1955, as the legend goes, Moon’s Lunch opened in the back of Moon’s Guns and Tackle, a popular sporting goods store run by Bernie and Cid Moon.” Since much of the known history is legend, I decided to do some “real” research and unveiled the following “more?” accurate history.

Bernie W. Moon, a native Iowan, moved to Stanley, Idaho in the early 1920’s. Somewhere he met and married Cecelia A. “Cid” Brown, of the Payette Browns, on April 20, 1923. From all accounts, they had one child, Martha J Moon-Nelson; who begat two children, Fern Drake of Kuna and Michael Dudley of Boise. In 1983, Mike purchased the Gun and Tackle from his grandfather, who had sold the cafe portion to Willis Hovey in 1980.  As far as we know, Bob and Lisa will be only the 6th owners of Moon’s in 52 years!  They are looking forward to the opportunity to become a part of this great history!
